Curosity killed the cat not the successful networker! A good dose of curosity can help you discover a plethora of information about the people you meet, your customers and networking contacts. So what makes a successful sticky beak?
1. Curosity
For example you might ask the question “What did you start your business for?’ or “what is your ultimate dream?” you might be very surprised by the answers you get, moreover, generally people will open up a bit and allow you to build rapport with them. These are also great ‘breaking the ice’ questions and aid in creating a comfortable place to ask more pertinant business questions.
2. Questioning Skills
Successful sticky beaks know the ‘right’ questions to ask to get the results they want, they are often succinct and direct in their approach. Take a minute to think about what your questions are like… do you take three sentences to get to the point of are you succinct and direct?
3. The ability to remember facts and details.
If there is one thing a sticky beak does well it is to remember names and facts, remembering names and facts is a critical skill for any networker today. People like to feel as though they are important enough for you to remember who they are and what they do. Here’s a tip… Whenever I meet someone I ask for a business card so I can look at the name and say ot to myself to reinforce it, I also use their name whenever I can during the conversation to help me remember.
4. They won’t let go
Sticky beaks are persistent and always follow up to get or impart the next piece of information! Most people don’t get what they want in their business because they simply do not follow up, get a bit of sticky beak and get what you want!
Until next time
